Solid rubber tyres, also referred to as solid or SE (Super Elastic) tyres, are a popular type used on wheels for industrial vehicles. They consist of two or three layers of rubber mixtures or compounds:

• A hard base layer or heel layer in the core, where applicable reinforced with steel wire rings.
• Where applicable a soft, springy, shock absorbing middle layer.
• An abrasion resistant outer layer fitted with tread.

The number of layers and their composition greatly affect the driving characteristics, rolling resistance and resilience of your solid rubber tyres. These factors combined with, among others, driving distances, the underlying surface and the vehicle and load weight will determine the energy consumption of your forklift, stacker or reach truck.

A more comfortable tyre will wear out faster; a more durable tyre is less springy. When choosing a tyre you need to take into account all the above factors as well as your own preferences.

Disadvantages of solid rubber tyres

Solid rubber tyres tend to heat up when used intensively - e.g. when the tyres are subjected to high speeds, long distances or heavy loads. Increasing heat can lead to damage or even explosion. In order to prevent this manufacturers add heat absorbing soot particles to solid tyres.

They not only extend the service life of the tyres, they also give them their characteristic black colour. The downside, however, is that they cause black streaks on the floor, which is problematic in many industries, including the food and chemical industries. The solution lies in non-marking solid rubber tyres in which the soot particles have been replaced with silica (which gives the tyre a yellowish colour) or chalk (resulting in a whiter colour).

The outer layer of this type of industrial tyre is wear resistant, but it is also very hard and not very springy. Solid rubber tyres consequently deliver the best performance at low speeds and on smooth surfaces. They are perfect for forklifts, scissor elevators, cherry pickers and reach trucks that operate primarily indoors. Some heavy duty forklifts also use them outside.
