A lead-acid battery is a type of battery that was invented by a French physicist in 1859. It is still commonly used today in all kinds of vehicles and other applications, from golf carts to solar panels and alarm systems. This popularity is probably due to the simple construction, which gives you a high electrical current and voltage for a relatively low price.

Which lead-acid battery do you need?

When replacing your lead-acid battery, it is best to buy a new one with the same specifications. Consider the dimensions and the connections. The following values are also important:

• the voltage (U), expressed in volts (V), usually 6V or 12V

What is the difference between a wet and a dry lead-acid battery?

That is not the case with a 'dry battery'. In a gel battery, the liquids have been replaced by a paste, whereas, in an AGM battery, they are safely woven into a glass mat.

• Regularly check the water level.
• Only top the battery up with demineralised water after charging.
• Keep your battery clean with a dry cloth.
  

How can you extend the service life of your lead-acid battery?

The lifespan of your lead-acid battery depends on how deeply you discharge it and the number of charges. A battery that is 100% discharged before the next charge is irreversibly damaged after just 300 charging cycles. Batteries that discharge less than 30% can easily last 1,000 charges.

Will you not use your lead-acid battery for a long time? Then store it charged in a warm place, not in a chilly shed in the winter. Also charge it regularly. Otherwise, the capacity will decrease to the point that your battery will no longer charge at all.
