What is a lead-acid starter battery?

A lead starter battery or lead-acid starter battery is a type of lead battery that is only suitable for producing a high current for a few seconds. In a car, for example, they produce the spark that starts the combustion engine.

Unlike a lead-acid traction battery, a lead-acid starter battery is not suitable for continuous discharging and charging. Starter batteries are only discharged for a short time. They recharge while driving, usually via a built-in alternator.

A lead-acid starter battery for an average car lasts about 5 years. The lifespan does depend heavily on usage. The more often it has to start up and recharge, the shorter its lifespan, which makes sense. But other factors also have an influence. For instance, batteries do not like to be too cold or too hot.
