What is a forklift battery?
A forklift battery consists of a number of electrochemical cells connected in series. The battery converts this stored chemical energy into electrical energy, which in turn controls key forklift functions such as lifting, starting and driving. A forklift battery consequently provides the right amount of energy to your forklift to enable it to perform various operations.
Different types of forklift batteries
Forklift batteries are categorised on the basis of both the operation and application of the battery. There are 4 different methods by which forklift batteries release their stored energy.
- Traditional lead batteries remain popular, thanks to their relatively simple construction and corresponding low price.
- Gel batteries are maintenance free and mainly used in the food and pharmaceutical industries.
- AGM batteries are also maintenance free and have a lower self-discharge and longer service life.
- Lithium ion batteries are the batteries of the future: they weigh less, have a longer service life,
deliver more power, are maintenance free and charge faster.
Moreover, each type of forklift battery has two potential applications.
- Starter batteries deliver a high current to diesel forklifts for a short period of time.
- (Full) traction batteries are slightly more powerful and have a longer service life, making them the
ideal battery for your electric forklift.
If you know which type of forklift battery you have and what it is used for, you can charge and maintain it properly. This will significantly extend the battery’s service life. Feel free to contact us if you are not sure.
How do you charge a forklift battery?
How long your forklift battery lasts depends largely on how you charge it and allow it to discharge. Keep the following tips in mind to extend the life of your battery.
- Don’t allow your battery to discharge by more than 80%. Deep discharges to below 20% will damage the battery and reduce battery power.
- Use the right battery charger. If the charging current is too low the battery will not charge, if it is too high the battery will be damaged.
- A battery will only charge a limited number of times. Avoid unnecessary intermediate charging and opt for charges of at least 8 hours. Lithium ion batteries can withstand intermediate charges.
- Disconnecting your forklift battery early will have a negative impact on subsequent charging sessions, it is advisable to leave the charger to complete its task without interruption.
- Are you not using your forklift all that
often? If so, remember to charge at least once a week anyway. This will avoid damage
to the battery and deep discharges that cause your battery to suddenly stop working when you
need it.
Forklift battery maintenance
Apart from charging, a forklift battery does not require a lot of maintenance. Regularly refilling and keeping the lead battery clean should suffice. Nevertheless, it is important to perform the following tasks on a regular basis. This will prevent rust formation on the battery, loss of capacity and/or premature discharging.
- Keep your battery clean using a dry rag, because an accumulation of dirt and moisture in the battery will lead to voltage leaks. Has some kind of fluid penetrated the cells, e.g. following an unexpected downpour? If that is the case don’t take any chances and contact us.
- A lead battery works with demineralized water. Check the water level regularly and
top up to the maximum if necessary after charging. Do not use tap water, which causes
internal short circuits. Tip: use one of our water filling systems.
