Find the charger that suits you

Chargers are essential, even when you're not using your battery. Your batteries have a slight self-discharge that leads to deep discharge in the long run. That puts them at risk of irreparable damage.

Conventional charger: often called a linear charger or transformer charger. Reliable and inexpensive. The only drawbacks are higher energy consumption and a humming noise while charging. Expect an average charging time of 12 hours.
High-frequency charger: cuts the charging time to 6 to 8 hours. This type is smaller, lighter and faster, but it does call for a substantial investment.

It's important to choose the right charger for your battery type. Think of lead-acid batteries, gel batteries, lithium-ion batteries or AGM batteries. Always compare the technical requirements of your vehicle battery with your battery charger for a perfect match. Make sure the charging voltage of the charger and the battery (in volts) is the same. How to use a battery charger

For optimal use and a long service life of your battery, keep a few things in mind:

Make sure the capacity of your battery never drops below 20%.
Don't disconnect your charger from your battery too early.
Avoid unnecessary interim charging, except with lithium-ion batteries.

The charging time of your battery depends on the type of battery and the type of charger. You can easily work out the charging time yourself by dividing the battery capacity by the maximum charging current. Then add 2 to 4 hours for topping up from roughly 80% to 100%.

Say you have a 200Ah battery that is half discharged and a 20A battery charger. Then the charging time is 100/20 = 5 + 4 = 9 hours. Still, it's best to allow 12 hours to charge a forklift battery after it has run a full 8-hour shift.
