What is a lithium ion battery?
The lithium ion battery or li ion battery is a large family of rechargeable batteries. They first came onto the market in 1991, and are safe, efficient and reliable. In short: this is the battery of the future.
Lithium ion batteries consist of only 2% of the chemical element lithium. Furthermore, they are made up of various compounds, of which lithium iron phosphate or LiFePO4 is the most common.
Most of the devices that work with a lithium ion battery are fitted with a Battery Management System. This avoids deep discharges and overcharges and the consequences of significant temperature fluctuations.
What are the advantages of a lithium ion battery?
Compared to other vehicle batteries, a lithium ion battery offers you a lot more.
- A short charging time
- No memory effect (they retain their capacity, even when they are not fully discharged)
- High energy density (they deliver a lot of power compared to their volume, and are even up to 70% lighter than a lead-acid battery)
- A life span of up to three times longer
- Low self-discharge
- High power
- More environmentally-friendly than other batteries.
What types of lithium ion batteries are there?
- Lithium ion starting battery: produces a high current for a short time.
- Semi-traction lithium ion battery: produces a constant current for a longer period of time.
- Traction lithium ion battery: discharges more often and deeper and is more powerful than semi-traction batteries.
How do you replace a lithium ion battery?
This is done one on one. You start by looking for a battery with the same connections, dimensions and electrical specification as your original battery. That’s the best guarantee for the proper functioning of the device that needs the energy from your lithium ion battery.
Questions about which battery you need? Send us a message, and we will look at the options together.
How long will your lithium ion battery last?
That depends on how and for how long you use the device that requires energy. The rule of thumb: take 80% of the battery capacity and divide that by the necessary current. For example, a lithium ion battery with a capacity of 1,000 Ah can provide 100A for 8 hours, or 200A for 4 hours. Then allow at least 8 to 12 hours for recharging.
How do you charge a lithium ion battery?
Proper charging avoids many problems with your battery. So, keep the following in mind:
- Never let the battery capacity fall below 20%.
- Use the right battery charger.
- A lithium ion battery is more flexible in charging than a traditional lead-acid battery. Intermediate
charges are therefore not harmful.
