Ordering trolley wheels to ensure seamless transportation
Trolley, hand truck or handcart wheels are wheels for industrial vehicles that were developed specifically for trolleys or handcarts, a manual means of transporting relatively small loads. You have probably seen them being used by a brewer delivering crates of drinks, or a courier using them to transport several packages simultaneously from their vehicle to someone’s front door. A trolley is suitable for use indoors and outdoors, in different weather conditions.
Selecting the perfect trolley wheel
An initial key requirement when ordering an appropriate trolley wheel is to use the correct dimensions to ensure that your new tyre fits your handcart. The tyre size is indicated on the outside of the tyre or on the inner tube. For most handcart wheels it is 3.00-4, 3.50-4 or 4.10-4, sometimes 4.00-4.
You can also find out the correct dimensions by measuring the axle. The diameter is the shaft hole, which is often 16, 20 or 25 mm wide. The length of the axle is the hub length, with common dimensions such as 45, 55 and 75 mm.
In addition to the dimensions, you have several choices for the rims and material of the trolley tyres.
Steel or plastic rims for trolley tyres
Plastic rims are cheaper and do not rust. They are consequently ideal for use in damp environments, e.g. if you often need to use the trolley outdoors.
Steel rims are more expensive but have a longer lifespan than plastic rims. They also offer greater load bearing capacity, which makes trolley tyres with steel rims suitable for heavy duty operations.
Needle or ball bearings for trolley tyres
A needle bearing consists of rolling metal pins in a plastic tube, for example as part of a plastic rim for trolley wheels. This will enable you to efficiently transport less heavy loads. A ball bearing in a steel rim offers greater durability and loadbearing capacity.
Anti-puncture or pneumatic tyres for trolley wheels
The name says it all: anti-puncture tyres will not go flat. They are made of a solid material and won’t lose tension when their exterior is punctured or torn by a sharp object. The disadvantage, however, is that they are heavier and less flexible than air-filled tyres.
Pneumatic tyres provide resilience and damping, which makes trolleys with pneumatic tyres more user friendly. The downside, however, is that pneumatic tyres are more at risk from sharp objects and rough surfaces.
In terms of trolley wheels you can also choose between smooth tyres or grooved tyres, which offer more grip, and between black or white wheels that do not leave marks.
