What is a relay?
Relays are electrical components that consist of an electromagnet. They switch an electric current on or off in response to an external electrical signal. Relays come in many different forms, depending, among other things, on their number of contacts, their operation and their coil voltage.
Relays are used to amplify a signal, to isolate current or to switch electrical devices remotely. The word relay is derived from the French verb 'relayer', meaning 'to pass' or 'to relay'. It is a reference to the coach house, where the stagecoach obtained new horses.
And what is a contactor?
A contactor or magnetic switch is a special type of relay. Contactors form the connection between the main circuit or power circuit on the one hand, and the auxiliary circuit or control circuit on the other. You will find contactors in machines, motors and switch panels, where they switch large electrical currents reliably and safely.
Relays and contactors: differences and similarities
Contactors are a type of relay. But, in addition to similarities, there are also differences.
- Most relays are used for smaller currents and for signal processing. Contactors switch larger electrical currents in industrial applications.
- Relays are often activated by low-voltage control circuits, while contactors use a heavier control voltage.
- Due to their sturdier loads, contactors have larger contacts and are physically sturdier.
Relays and contactors in your forklift, stacker or reach truck
Relays and contactors have hundreds of applications. They are also essential for your forklift, stacker or reach truck. Here are some of the functions they perform in your vehicle.
- Start-up: contactors switch the current from the starter motor to the main motor.
- Control: relays process the signals in, among other things, the lighting, horns and sensors.
- Safety: relays and contactors activate emergency stop signals or safety circuits.
