To do this, these machines for internal transport almost always use two forks, sturdy metal fork extensions that lift the loads.

Choose a forklift fork that suits your machine

The fork section of a forklift consists of two forks or blades, a pair of detachable, robust, L-shaped components that slide underneath a pallet or another load to lift and transport it. You attach the forklift forks to the fork carriage, which moves up and down against the forklift mast.

Shift the forks sideways to position loads with precision, without moving the forklift. To do this, you mount a sideshift between the fork carriage and the forks. Forklift forks are without doubt the most popular and best-known forklift attachments. For your machine to operate efficiently and safely, choosing the right forks is crucial.

Check the load capacity and dimensions of your forklift forks

Lifting loads of 2,000 kg is only possible when not only your forklift but also your forks have a load capacity of at least 2 tonnes. The load capacity of forklift forks depends on the material they are made of and their dimensions. The thicker and wider the forks, the heavier the loads they can handle.

The height at which you mount your fork carriage determines the dimensions of your forklift forks. For safely transporting euro pallets, a minimum fork length of 1200 mm is required. The further the forks extend, the more stable the load sits and the more safely you can drive around with it. Do you work alternately with narrow and wide loads? Thanks to a fork positioner you adjust the distance between the two forks hydraulically from the cab without having to step out each time.

Choose the right type of forklift fork

The most common forklift forks are FEM forks or ISO forks. You hang them with an upper hook and a lower hook. We divide FEM forks into 5 categories, from which you make a choice based on the load capacity of your forklift.

• FEM 1 up to 1,000 kg
• FEM 2 from 1,000 to 2,500 kg
• FEM 3 from 2,500 to 5,000 kg
• FEM 4 from 5,000 to 8,000 kg
• FEM 5 from 8,000 to 11,000 kg

At JVD Parts you order forklift forks of category 2, 3 or 4. The maximum load capacity is easy to derive from the name: Cascade Forks 2A belong to category 2, Cascade Forks 3A to category 3.

In addition to the common FEM forks, manufacturers also developed the following types:

• DIN forks hang at a different angle on the forklift than FEM forks and are seen mainly on heavier industrial vehicles in agriculture and construction.
• Pin forks have a hollow tube at the top that you slide over a pin on the forklift's fork carriage.
• Terminal West forks have the same suspension at the top as DIN forks; at the bottom you secure them with a pin through two eyes.

Special forklift forks

In addition, there are forks for forklifts with special applications. Weighing forks, for example, let you check the weight of goods on the move and add up different loads together. They can also count items, read codes and record data.

Hydraulic telescopic forks can easily be made longer and shorter. This makes it easier to load and unload goods at the side of a truck. A more affordable alternative is fork extensions.

Special versions are also possible, for example with an anti-slip coating for damp working environments, with a stainless steel casing for loads with an explosion risk, or folding forks for more manoeuvring room in tight spaces.
