What is a vehicle battery?

A vehicle battery supplies the necessary energy to your means of transport. Vehicle batteries consist of a number of electrochemical cells connected in series. They convert the stored chemical energy into electrical energy.

For example, you would use a vehicle battery to drive high-powered electric transport equipment, such as forklifts, pallet trucks and stackers. Starter batteries produce the spark that starts the combustion engine.

What types of vehicle batteries are there?

JVD Parts has an extensive range of DIN batteries. These have cells with a width of 198 millimetres. Furthermore, batteries can be classified according to the type on the one hand and the application on the other.

One type of battery can be used for different applications. It is important to know which vehicle battery you have, in order to maintain and charge the battery properly. In this way, you will extend the life of your battery.

How do you maintain a vehicle battery?

Early discharge, lack of battery capacity, oxide formation on the battery, etc. A lot of battery problems can be avoided with proper maintenance. Always keep the following in mind.

• You must top up a lead-acid battery with demineralised water. Check the water level regularly, for example weekly in the case of frequent use. If necessary, top up to the maximum indication after charging. Do not use tap water, which could be contaminated and has too high an electrical conductivity, which leads to an internal short circuit.

• Keep your battery clean with a dry cloth. Dirt and moisture always cause leakage voltages. Has water, moisture, acid, oil or another liquid penetrated between the cells, for example after the battery has been left out in the rain? Then don't start tinkering with it yourself, but contact us.
  

How do you charge a forklift battery?

The most important factor in maintaining your battery is the charging. Do this properly and regularly to extend the life of your battery.

• Avoid discharges above 80%. Deep discharges like this damage the battery and reduce its power.
• Use the right battery charger. If the charging current is too light, the battery will not charge. If it is too heavy, you can damage your battery.
• Avoid unnecessary intermediate charging. Every charge should preferably last at least 8 hours. An exception is the lithium ion battery.
• You should also not disconnect your battery too early. This has a negative impact on subsequent charging cycles.
• Charge at least weekly. This prevents the battery plates from hardening, which would cause your battery to no longer charge. In addition, this reduces the risk of deep discharge due to self-discharge of your battery.
