What is an ignition switch?

We all know ignition switches from our cars. It is also known as the ignition lock, and is located on the steering column. The driver inserts his matching key into the ignition and turns it. In this way, he switches on the electrical systems of his vehicle and then activates the starter motor and the main engine.

How an ignition switch works

An ignition switch is an electrical component that is worthless without a key. The key turns the switch into various positions. These are usually labelled 'off', 'on' and 'start'.

• Off: The vehicle's electrical systems are turned off and the engine is inactive. The key is not locked in this position. The driver can freely insert it into the lock and remove it again. 
• On: When you turn the key to this position, you activate the electrical systems of your vehicle, such as lights, radio and air conditioning. The engine is still not on. 
• Start: Turn the key one position further and you will hear how the starter motor sets the main engine in motion. As soon as the engine is running, you let the key automatically return to the 'on' position.
