Buying a forklift seat: what to pay attention to

Is the upholstery torn, or is the suspension worn? Then it’s time to replace the seat of your reach truck or forklift. When looking for a new seat, pay attention to the following:

• The surface you usually drive on determines your suspension. Choose sturdy suspension if your forklift mainly runs over uneven terrain and needs to absorb many vibrations and shocks. For a reach truck that mostly drives on smooth warehouse floors, standard suspension is sufficient.
• Is the same person always using your vehicle, or are there different drivers? The more adjustment options your seat has, the easier it is to tailor it. Think of adjusting the lumbar support and settings based on driver weight.
• The cabin of a reach truck is quite narrow. In this case, it’s better to choose a slim, compact seat. In a forklift cage you have more room. Make sure the driver has enough space to adopt an ergonomic sitting position.

The perfect seat for the perfect seating position

Forklifts and reach trucks are designed to take over demanding tasks. This reduces the risk of physical complaints resulting from heavy manual labour. Still, operating these industrial vehicles can involve risks. Anyone who has worked for a while in an uncomfortable position will know exactly what we mean.

To prevent back problems, drivers should adopt an ergonomic seating position. This means not sitting too close to or too far from the steering wheel and pedals. Your thighs are horizontal and rest partly on the seat. There should be room for 2 to 3 fingers between the front edge of the seat and the back of your knee.

The dimensions of your cabin determine the size of your seat. There must be at least 1 metre between the seat surface of your new seat and the roof of the forklift cage. Even better is to take the driver’s height into account. Follow this step-by-step plan:

1. Measure the distance between the underside of the seat (the rails it slides into) and the roof of the cabin.
2. Subtract the length of the driver’s torso, from the seat surface to the top of the head.
3. Subtract 12 centimetres to ensure sufficient clearance between the driver’s head and the cage.
4. The result is the maximum height of your new seat, including the suspension system.

Extra tip: make sure you have correctly adjusted mirrors for your industrial vehicle. This way you won’t have to constantly change posture to see everything around you.
