How do you maintain a lead-acid traction battery?

You want a longer life for your lead-acid battery? Then these tips are indispensable.

Check your water level regularly.
Only top up with demineralised water after charging.
Keep the traction battery clean with a dry cloth.

How long will your lead-acid traction battery last?

Your battery capacity, expressed in amperes per hour (Ah), depends on how and how long you use the device that needs the energy. Lifting with a forklift, for example, requires more energy than driving it, unless you need to negotiate slopes, of course.

You should always bear in mind that you should never discharge your battery beyond 80%. A lead-acid traction battery with a stated capacity of 800 Ah actually only has 640 Ah available. That could be 8 hours at 80 A or 2 hours at 320 A. Or even less: the higher the current, the greater the (heat) losses.

How do you charge a lead-acid traction battery?

Remember these tips so as not to damage your battery when charging.

Never, NEVER discharge beyond 80%.
Use the right battery charger.
Do not disconnect your battery too early.
Avoid unnecessary intermediate charging.
