Buying extension forks = working more safely and efficiently

Extension forks are also referred to as fork extenders or extension skids. They slide onto or are placed on top of the forks of a forklift to increase its reach,  in order to safely and efficiently lift and transport loads with dimensions that differ from the standard Euro pallet. For example, to transport goods that are wider or have greater depth, or to move two pallets in one go.

Benefits of extension forks

Do you regularly handle loads that cannot be moved with your forklift? If so, one option is to purchase a second machine equipped with long forks. However, it would be cheaper, more flexible and more practical to order extension forks for your forklift. They would offer the following advantages:

Extension forks are used as follows

Their use depends on the type of extension fork.

• Open extension forks are open underneath. They are placed on top of the forklift forks and then secured. They are lighter and cheaper than the enclosed option, but they can only be used providing the load is evenly distributed across the entire fork length.
• Enclosed extension forks are rectangular sleeves that completely enclose the forklift forks. They are bolted on. Due to their sturdy support, they offer a high load bearing capacity and provide the option of placing the load only on the fork extenders.

60% rule for extension forks

The longer the extension forks, the greater their load bearing capacity. Obviously, this doesn’t mean that you can use 5 m long fork extenders. In fact, the forklift forks must support at least 60% of the extension forks (both open and enclosed). This implies that:

• 1.4 m extension forks must be used on forks that are at least 84 cm long.
• 1.6 m extension forks must be used on forks that are at least 96 cm long.
• 1.8 m extension forks must be used on forks that are at least 1.08 m long.
• 2 m extension forks must be used on forks that are at least 1.2 m long.
• 2.2 m extension forks must be used on forks that are at least 1.32 m long.
• 2.4 m extension forks must be used on forks that are at least 1.44 m long.
