What is an AGM battery?
An AGM battery is a safe, powerful and reliable battery. Like a lead-acid battery, it works with lead plates surrounded by an acid.
AGM stands for ‘Absorbed Glass Mat’. The battery acid is contained in woven fibreglass mats between the lead plates. They form a kind of protective membrane. That’s why this type of battery is also called a 'glass fibre battery'.
The AGM battery is ideal for hundreds of applications: from toy trains, through light systems to boats.
What are the advantages of an AGM battery?
Thanks to its innovative operation, an AGM battery offers many advantages compared to other vehicle batteries:
- Flexible application: you can mount it in any position, except upside-down, which makes it perfect for hard-to-reach places.
- Deeper and longer: the glass mats protect the plates, so that the AGM discharges more deeply and lasts longer.
- Low self-discharge: when not in use, an AGM battery loses relatively little charge. You can therefore store it for longer without the risk of deep discharge and the associated damage.
- Mobile use: as the acid is packaged in the glass mats, any abrupt movements will not cause leaks.
- Maintenance-free: an AGM battery does not need to be refilled, which means it can be used autonomously for a long period, for example in remote locations.
- Safer: no gases can escape from an AGM battery, so you don’t have to fear the formation of dangerous (explosive) oxyhydrogen gas.
Which AGM battery do you need?
Are you replacing your AGM battery? Don’t immediately take your old battery to the recycling park, but make a note of its type. Think about the electrical specifications, connections and dimensions. Then look for the best possible match in our webshop.
Couldn’t find what you need? Contact us, together we’ll be sure to find a solution.
What types of AGM batteries are there?
There are different types of AGM batteries, each with its own application:
- AGM starter battery: supplies a high current for several seconds.
- AGM semi-traction battery: produces a constant current for a longer period of time.
- AGM traction battery: compared to semi-traction batteries, it discharges more often and deeper, and is more powerful.
How do you charge an AGM battery?
Charge your battery properly for a longer service life:
- Never, NEVER discharge beyond 80%.
- Use the right battery charger.
- Do not disconnect your battery too early.
- Avoid unnecessary intermediate charging.
What is the difference between an AGM battery and a gel battery?
A lead-acid battery is also called a 'wet battery'. The disadvantages this entails were partly solved by the arrival of the gel battery or 'dry battery'. The acid was transformed into a kind of paste.
An AGM battery is also a 'dry battery', but works in a different way than a gel battery. The acid is still liquid, but is 'trapped' in woven fibreglass plates. It thereby retains its capacity and still requires no maintenance.
